If someone asked you to think about middle-aged male actors in Hollywood, Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Hugh Jackman would probably come to mind. If you were asked to choose an actor who has a unique attraction in each film, you may recall Johnny Depp. Like this, when people think about ‘Johnny Depp’, most of them recollect his unusual roles and convincing make-up. Johnny Depp, born in 1963, made his debut in the 1984 horror movie ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’. In the 1990 movie Edward Scissorhands, he gained his fame and met the movie director Tim Burton who became Johnny Depp’s partner. After that, he did some voice acting as well as acting in numerous works including; From Hell(2001), Corpse Bride(2005), Alice In Wonderland(2010),The Lone Ranger(2013), and Transcendence(2014). I want to introduce some major works of Johnny Depp’s which show different characters he has portrayed over time. Edward Scissorhands that introduced Johnny Depp to the world, Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl that sent Johnny Depp on to stardom, and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory which was loved by many children. Let’s look into these movies and Johnny Depp.
1. Edward Scissorhands(1990)–Edward Scissorhands
A cosmetics saleswoman, Peg, met an artificial man named Edward, an unfinished creation who has scissors for hands and took him home after finding him living alone in a remote castle. Peg’s neighbors were on their guard against Edward because of his strange appearance and scissor hands. But as Edward kindly helped people by using his scissor hands, everyone got a good feeling about him. Edward fell in love with Peg’s daughter Kim at first sight. Using Edwards blind love for Kim against him, Kim’s boyfriend Jim made Edward join him in a robbery. However, only Edward was caught. The neighborhood people began to distrust Edward again. One day, Peg’s son Kevin ran into danger and Edward dashed into the street to save him. While Edward pushed Kevin out of harms way, Edward cut Kevin’s arms and face by mistake. This caused witnesses to think Edward had attacked Kevin. This unfortunate situation caused Edward to flee back to his hilltop mansion.
Disheveled hair, a pallid face cut by scissorhands, scary scissor hands, glaring eyes; this image of Edward was played by Johnny Depp. When Edward lived alone at his mansion, he scratched only his face. But when he lived in the village, he realized his scissor hands could be a threat to people and things around him. It makes him very sad and audiences want to hug him. His attraction; though he was sucked in and was ostracized by some selfish people, he treated people with his pure intentions and good nature. This contrasts with his appearance which made people laugh and cry. Johnny Depp suitably showed the proper harmony of beauty and sadness, artificial beauty and pure beauty.
2. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl(2003) - Captain Jack Sparrow
A pirate, Hector Barbossa, and his men were under a curse that caused them to change into skeletons in the moonlight and never die. This curse came about because he stole a ship called The Black Pearl and some treasure from the pirate Jack Sparrow. A governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann, had the last key that could lift the curse so Barbossa kidnapped her. Elizabeth’s childhood friend Will Turner went to Jack and asked to him to help save her. They chased the Black Pearl with the Interceptor and Elizabeth’s betrothed, commodore James Norrington, chased the Interceptor. Barbossa’s gang, Jack and Will, and commodore Norrington group; these three groups had battles amongst themselves. Of course, Barbossa’s gang were superior because of their curse. At the moment Will returned the last treasure Elizabeth had, the Barbossa gangs’ curse was exorcised and they died. Finally, Elizabeth and Will confirmed each other’s love and Jack got back his Black Pearl.
Intense eye make-up and finely braided beard; this is the appearance of Jack Sparrow which makes him easily recognizable as a pirate. The image of Jack Sparrow as a comic, off the wall, overly proud and sloppy person was inspired by the Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards. Richards also happens to be Johnny Depp’s idol. Depp was influenced by his idol’s figure full of self-confidence. Also, Johnny Depp added the image of Pepe Le Pew to the Jack Sparrow character. Pepe Le Pewis, a character from a Looney Tunes cartoon who changes his appearance depending on various situations, and stays until the end of a party, drinking and stumbling. So someone said, “Jack Sparrow is a hybrid of Keith Richards and Pepe Le Pew.”
3. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory(2005)-Willy Wonka
Willy Wonka, who is the president of the universally celebrated ‘Willy Wonka chocolate factory’, hid a golden ticket in five chocolate bars and distributed them to anonymous locations worldwide. The five children-discoverers of the golden tickets win a visit to the ‘Willy Wonka chocolate factory’. And Willy Wonka is supposed to give a prize to one of those five. Gluttonous Augustus falls into the chocolate river while sucking up chocolates by a pipe. Violet, who is continuously chewing gum, chews a piece of experimental gum and becomes a blueberry. Veruca, who pesters her parents to get what she wants, covets a squirrel that sorts nuts, and the other squirrels throw her away into the garbage chute. Mike, who is addicted to TV games, shrinks himself using a teleporter Wonka invented. Charlie, being the last child left, reminds Willy Wonka of the meaning of a family, and wins the prize - the factory itself.
Willy Wonka, played by Johnny Depp, has a pale face and neat bobbed hair. Showing off a younger appearance by make-up, he played a perfect Willy Wonkawho is ridiculous and has a strong individuality in the way he walks, speaks, acts, and smiles. Johnny Depp who was 43 years old at the time, properly expressed the childish and selfish president of a chocolate factory with an unbelievably young face. Willy Wonka can’t say ‘Parents’ well, makes a sad face whenever thinking of father, and doesn’t understand the love of family. Maybe it is the ultimate goal that the movie wants to express that Willy Wonka makes up with his father and knows about the warmth of family thanks to Charlie.
The reasons Johnny Depp is so loved are related to his distinctive make-up as well as his excellent acting. He showed such diverse and colorful make-up in each movie that only with the ending credits could the audience know that it was Johnny Depp. When asked why he hid his true face and put on excessive make-up in the movie, Johnny Depp replied, “I think it is a kind of actor’s obligation that an actor changes every moment. It is for audiences as well as co-workers. Think about if you eat meat every time. You would be bored easily. In acting, it is the same with me. ”It is worth wondering what kinds of make-up and what roles Johnny Depp will use to show off his charms in the future.
