“Eat a warm breakfast and start your day with energy.” A breakfast support event has been launched at Gachon University with this slogan. With the dramatic rise in inflation, food expenses especially have risen a lot. To aid the weakness of our wallets, Gachon University held the ‘1,000 won breakfast’ event to help busy students in the morning.
-How to participate
The 1,000 won breakfast event is operated on a first-come-first-served basis, with a total of 410 people a day, 250 people per day from 7:30am to 9:30am at the Vision Tower Student cafeteria, and 160 people per day from 8:00am to 9:30am at the 3rd student dormitory cafeteria. Food tickets are purchased using kiosks in the cafeterias. The event takes place in three locations: the Global Campus Vision Tower cafeteria, the 3rd dormitory cafeteria, and the Medical Campus Student cafeteria. It is held every weekday from March 27 to June 15, 2023.

Gachon University's breakfast event differs from other universities' breakfast events that are supported by government subsidies or related ministries. Since last year, Gachon University professors and faculty members have raised a total of 383 million won and donated it to the space ‘Faculty and Student Love Fund’ so that students can reduce the burden of food expenses and focus on their studies. Gachon University students can enjoy breakfast from 4,000 won to 1,000 won, and the shortfall of 3,000 won is covered by the fund.
-Opinions on the breakfast event
Park Jae-il, a dietitian at the 3rd student dormitory cafeteria, "5,000 won for school meals can be a burden on someone, but it's good that students can eat cheaply and comfortably through the breakfast event."
Jeong Yuna (Department of Business Administration 1), a student who often uses breakfast events, said, “These days, it costs more than 10,000 won for just one meal, so it’s truly beneficial to have the opportunity to eat at a lower price." and “It was meaningful and grateful that it is made possible by generous contributions from professors and faculty members." Yoon Ye-seo (Department of Business Administration, 1) said, “I hope that the breakfast event, which started with a noble purpose, will continue beyond the first semester."
Gachon University President Lee Gil-yeo said, “We have gathered our hearts to reduce the burden of food expenses for students and create healthy eating habits. We will continue to implement various programs for students.” Thus , all faculty members have actively participated in the program for students, but the number of students who use the 1,000 won breakfast is gradually decreasing. This situation has resulted in unnecessary expenses such as waste disposal costs, labor costs, and energy costs due to leftover food.
