I was asked to share my thoughts and ideas on how students can improve their English speaking skills. It goes without saying that the best way to learn a language is to live in the country of that target language, but, of course, you have to have the means and get the acceptance from your parents, which is no easy task. So, most of you are left with trying to find ways to improve your English in your own country. As difficult as that may seem, it is possible, with a little passion and motivation, to achieve this goal.
One thing that you can do, which involves the use of media, is to make watching, listening, and reading the news in English a daily ritual. Whether you are on the train or have a short break between classes, tune in to or read English news. Not only will you be more aware about what is happening in the world, you will also get used to seeing and listening to how formal English is used and spoken.
Another idea, which involves entertainment, is to find English speaking television shows and movies to your liking and watch them on a daily basis. Getting exposed to dialog used in TV or movies will help you become more familiarized with everyday informal English speaking settings.
Finally, the Global Zone offers everything that I have mentioned previously and more. If you would like to practice using your English, there is almost always a professor there to speak to, and the best part is, it is free! If money and time is not a problem for you, then I suggest signing up for one of the intensive English courses offered there. They offer small classes so that you can get the one-on-one help in a friendly non-stressful atmosphere.
It is not enough to just go to class and expect that your English will magically improve, especially with regards to speaking, because for many of you after class, you go right back to Korean. If you have the desire to improve your English speaking skills, then surround yourself with it as much as possible and take advantage of what the school has to offer. I guarantee that after a few months, your hard work and effort will pay off.
